Commissioners joined all elected officials and employees of Clermont County in mourning Detective Bill Brewer, a brave deputy sheriff who lost his life in the line of duty. They also thanked Lt. Nick DeRose, who was injured, for his bravery.

Clermont County’s 911 system now includes a feature called Rapid SOS, allowing 911 calls that are made with a cell phone to be accurately pinpointed by using the GPS on the caller’s phone. Motorola Solution’s CallWorks system was installed at the 911 dispatch center. Now, using the GPS on the caller’s phone, the location of the caller can be pinpointed, and first responders can get to the scene more quickly.

The Clermont County Soil & Water District (SWCD), the Clermont Office of Environmental Quality (OEQ), and the U.S. EPA Office of Research and Development were awarded the top government stormwater project of the year at the 2019 Ohio Stormwater Conference. The project, funded by a USDA Conservation Innovation Grant, involved the installation of an urban stormwater detention basin on a farm in Jackson Township in Clermont County in 2015. Its purpose was to remove nutrients from soil runoff. The nutrients are one of the causes of harmful algae blooms in Harsha Lake.

Clermont County Sheriff Robert S. (Steve) Leahy was presented with a CARES award from the Ohio Association of County Behavioral Health Authorities at Ohio’s 2019 Opiate and Other Drug Conference: Promoting Solutions for Addiction Throughout Ohio. Sheriff Leahy has been an incredibly strong supporter of the behavioral health system, assuring that inmates in the county jail are assessed and linked to treatment upon release.

Bold but deliberate decisions by Clermont County officials in 2005 continued to pay off 14 years later when Total Quality Logistics (TQL) announced plans to construct a second building at Ivy Pointe Boulevard in Union Township. The expansion will accommodate nearly 600 new employees that the third-party logistics company anticipates hiring, primarily in sales and information technology, over the next five years.

Clermont County opened a $2.5 million, 20,000-square-foot Records Center off Clermont Center Drive behind the Clermont County Family Support Center, 2400 Clermont Center Drive, Batavia. The center will allow Clermont County to securely store and preserve the records of Clermont County for generations to come. Its three employees manage records for more than 40 county offices and departments, providing consistency to the management of county information while maintaining compliance with the Ohio Revised Code.

Design Within Reach, a furniture and home accessories company opened a huge distribution facility at South Afton Industrial Park, the first property developed on SR 32 and Half Acre Road. Design Within Reach employs more than 100 people in the $17-million, 617,760-square foot distribution center. It’s second in size only to the former Ford plant, which was built almost 40 years ago.

To handle a rapidly expanding caseload caused primarily by the drug crisis, the Clermont County Common Pleas Court Adult Probation Department added both space and staff. On Oct. 23, the Board of County Commissioners authorized the lease of additional office space at 322 E. Main St. in Batavia. Meantime, the department hired four employees this year to bring its size to 34.

FC Cincinnati opened a world-class, $35-million Mercy Health Training Center in Milford. “We are already seeing new investment come to our community with new hotels being announced nearby, and we know more development will follow over time,” said David Painter, president of the Clermont County Board of Commissioners. He noted that the FC Cincinnati youth academy has dramatically changed the youth soccer landscape. “This will have a profound impact on new development, both residential and commercial, which will ultimately benefit all our residents through new investment in our community.”
Major work on the State Route 32 corridor will continue into 2021, thanks to funding awarded through the highly competitive Transportation Review Advisory Committee (TRAC) process. Clermont County Engineer Jeremy Evans said the $61.2 million in TRAC funding, combined with $11.5 million in ODOT safety funds and a $10.04 million local contribution, will pay for:
-A new interchange near Bach-Buxton Road and SR 32
-A partial interchange at Glen Este-Withamsville Road
-An additional lane on westbound SR 32

Timothy Dick, 48, of Union Township was promoted to director of the Clermont County Department of Job and Family Services (DJFS). The Clermont County Board of County Commissioners appointed Dick to the position on Nov. 4. He had served as interim director of DJFS for five months.
